The hills of the plateau region

The Deccan plateau is bounded by the western ghats on the west, the eastern ghats on the east and the
Satpura hills in the north. The Vindhyas and the Satpura hills separate the Indo-Gangetic plain of northern India from the plateau region of south India.
The Western Ghats, a chain of hills running parallel to the Arabian Sea, is a continuous stretch. It encloses the highest peak of South India, Anamudi of the Cardamom hills in Kerala. The western ghats are known as Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu, Coorg in Karnataka and Sahyadris In Maharashtra.
Doddabettaof the Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu is the second highest peak of the region. The Western Ghats are the source of the Deccan rivers. The Eastern Ghats are a chain of hills running parallel to the Bay of Bengal.
Unlike the Western Ghats, the Eastern Ghats are eroded and broken through by major rivers and are of low hight. The highest peak of the Eastern Ghats is Mahendragiri, Which lies in Orissa. The Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats meet at Nilgiris of Tamil Nadu. Palghat, Thal and Bhor Ghat are natural passes of the Western Ghats.
